Opal doublets and triplets are sold by the stone,
rather than by the carat. The largest available
triplets have diameters measured in inches, and
may cost several hundred dollars. Small stones
can be purchased for under $100.
Opal is not a common
gemstone, although non-precious varietis Abound.
Prices have risen to the point where synthesis
became an enticing goal. Recently Pierre Gilson
of Paris has succeeded in syn¬thesizing in
the laboratory both white and black opal of fine
quality. The synthetics are very difficult to
tell from natural opal, and are sure to play role
in the gem market in the years ahead.

Consumer
Tips-Black opal is the most expensive opal, and
fine gems may bring more than $1,000 per carat.
Fine white opals may sell for hundreds of dollars
per carat. Doublets and triplets are usually sold
by rather than by weight, and are usually cut
to "standard" dimensions. |
